Incredible food, great service and very unique authentic Vietnamese. I have no idea what half of the menu is, but every time I go here I order something new. Just tried the crepe and was pleasantly surprised. You can't go wrong with the bowls: a perfect combo of fresh elements to cooked rice and protein. The server we had was from Vietnam and was more than willing to explain how items were made and what dish was the most authentic. If you like traditional Chinese food, try this. You won't be let down on this type of cuisine.

Before I ate here I had never experienced Vietnamese Pho before. Well, this place ruined it for me for all other restaurants because theirs is SO FREAKING GOOD!!!! (Like what I did there? You thought I was going one way and then went the other...) Anyways, the only downfall this place has is it's really, really slow service. If you're in a rush or have limited time to eat, it's probably best to avoid this place as a typical dining experience for me here is usually in excess of over an hour (and that's even if I'm by myself!). However, if you've got time to kill, on a date or are waiting on a movie to start at the theater next door, this is a great place. The Pho w/dumplings made of pork and chicken is simply amazing and cannot be equaled. Believe me, I've looked all over 2 different nearby states and cannot find anything close to the quality they serve. The Spring Rolls are also excellent and tasty. I miss it soooo much and I can promise that when I return to Cedar Rapids to visit this will be the first place I eat!

If you like pho, and you're in Cedar Rapids, you have two options. If you like adequate parking, congratulations. Your options have just been halved. Thankfully, Pho Mai is very good. I'm not enough of a connoisseur to get very specific on what I like about the flavors of the broth. I just know that whatever it's made from imparts a nice taste on the broth. I also really liked the amount and quality of the meat in my pho. The easiest ways to cut costs on something like pho are either cutting back on the amount of meat, or the quality of the meat. Pho Mai puts a good amount of what I think I recall the menu listing as round eye in with the noodles and broth. It was very tasty, and was neither tough, nor fatty. The only things that I would tweak about Pho Mai's pho are the salt and the chile. A little more salt would have been helpful. Of course, they may go easy on the salt because they assume you're either going to add the soy sauce, or the sriracha that is on every table. So, that's probably a good thing. As far as the chile is concerned, I would like a few more options. Sriracha is good, but I like when pho places have their own dishes of chili paste. En lieu of that, it wouldn't hurt to add an option like Ichimi Togarashi, or gochujong. I know that those aren't Vietnamese. I still think they'd be a good addition.

This is our favorite pho place in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area we have tried. I highly recommend!!!

Huge fan! Visiting from mpls I used yelps search engine to hopefully find a quality Vietnamese restaurant to eat at. Two places came up and this one had the higher scores and reviews in general. We arrived shortly after noon on Saturday and I was feeling a little uneasy as just the middle table was occupied by a group of 5 and the rest of the place was empty...okay lets give it a shot! Shortly after sitting and ordering from the the waiter who was very kind and efficient the place filled up super quick. I ordered what was probably the best bowl of bun bo hue I've ever had. Mpls serves some killer soups but this place shined by putting ample amounts of meat goodies in it where at the end of the bowl I wasnt just looking at noodles and broth. My Brother had the pho which he let me tast the broth and it was also very delicious and on par with anything I've ever made or tasted in mpls. The side plates of fixings were a little shy on the jalapenos and we asked if we could get more and without a beat they brought on a plate of a whole lot more. I was very pleased with the service and food. I will definitely return when I'm back in the area. DELICIOUS!

My and I really like this place were always searching for a good pho place on town. The house pho is delicious! The broth is on point clean almost consomme like and comes with all the fixing meatball, tendon, sliced beef, lots of veggies on the side. Only complain is wish they have liquor license i need beer with my pho!

I love this Pho place! You know a local Asian place is good when you see other Asians eating there. I see other Asians eating here every time I go! Pho is great. Condiments are right on (basil leaves, bean sprouts, and jalapeños). I have had the spring rolls, egg rolls and the ground meat around the sugar cane and these appetizers are tasty and authentic.

I was glad to find this place on one of my visits to the area. It was rainy yesterday and I longed for pho. I usually indulge my cravings and indulgence happened successfully yesterday! The restaurant was clean and nice inside. The staff were all Caucasians, which made me wonder a little on the authenticity. I wanted real Vietnamese made pho. But you never know...as long as it tastes like it's supposed to be, that's all that matters. I was gladly trying to find out. I ordered and the server assumed I wanted a small size. I corrected him that I wanted a large. Being a girl didn't constitute that I wasn't hungry! It's true.. I usually couldn't finish a large pho, but I always order large because I want more meat than a small bowl gives. I don't mind leaving some noodles behind. The worst of eating pho for me is when all the meats are gone before you know it, and I have all those noodles to deal with. The soup came and like a pho pro, I savored the broth first. It was definitely authentic and yummy. It was clean and it was rich with a hint of cinnamon. Perfect! I did like to ruin a broth by adding hot sauce. But at least I make efforts to savor several spoonfuls before the damage was done. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. Even until I set aside the bowl giving up, I saw a slice of beef peeking out. Wow! There was more than enough meats for me and then some! I'll be back next time rain or not.

One of the best Vietnamese restaurant in Cedar rapids, Coralville and Iowa City. It's a small family owned restaurant which I love. The food is not Americanized and it has all the authentic viet flavors like it suppose to taste. I see a lot of Asian restaurant catering to American people standards of liking and I hate it when they do that. When you come to Mai pho you'll get the best home land flavors. I like their whole menu so I'm not going to go on about which I like the most.

Food was great, service was good and LOVE the bubble tea. I had the coconut one. Next time I want to try mango. This place also has a nice atmosphere including a fish tank.

I was so excited to find a Pho place! I got the vegetable pho & added shrimp. I got the small and could barely eat half of it. It was huge and so DELICIOUS!!! My boyfriend got the triple delight & said he really enjoyed it (the plate was cleared!). We also got the spring rolls which could use another shrimp or two but they were really good. We will definitely be back. And come winter time, we will be regulars! Nothing like some hot soup to warm you up & this is the best!!!

Went in there over the lunch hour and had the House Special vegetarian entree. It was delicious. As was the bubble tea. The spring roll appetizer was so-so. It may just be my delicate American sensibilities, but I lose my appetite when the shrimp in my food isn't deveined. Ew. The wait staff appeared busy, but were helping each other out (delivering food for the other, dropping off checks, etc), which I'm always glad to see. I'd rather have multiple servers checking on me than wait on one really busy server. The check drop did take a little while, but they were busy, so completely understandable. I'd eat here again - minus the spring rolls. This was literally the worst FOOD I've ever had. I ordered take out on a Tuesday at 7:30, was told my food would be ready in 25-30 minutes. I arrived at 8, and was asked to wait. They took my order a second time, and I waited until 8:20... I paid my bill and took the food home. The noodles were colder than room temperature, tasteless and had shrimp and beef mixed in. I ordered CHICKEN! CHICKEN! I ordered it 2 times, you'd think they could understand it by then. To try to make this horseshit palatable, I added about half a cup of soy sauce. No dice, still tasted like a fisherman took a piss in it. I'm trying to wash the horrific taste out of my mouth as I type this. Maybe mercy will intervene soon and finally make me vomit. The crap rangoons were a literal affront to god. Burned, empty and tasteless. Literally the worst I could imagine, with the exception of them filling the damned thing with dog food. This meal made me want to drown myself. It led me to drink caffeine free diet soda. May god have mercy on the monster that made this affront to god.

Loved my summer rolls and how good the spring rolls were on the bun dish. Everything was very fresh and just what I expect. I've eaten at over 100 Vietnamese places and this one is in my top 10.

Great place with wonderful service. I've never had Vietnamese food before so this is my first place. They were very helpful with choosing really great food. Even available for take out and will help you to put the order together at home. We had the number one, number 29, and number 47. Everything was delicious.

We had such a great experience here the first time we came that we braved the drive to CR just for lunch this past Saturday. We arrived and were greeted and seated by a waitress, who got our drinks and then took our order. And that was it! We were essentially the only customers in the restaurant, and it took another couple coming in, getting their appetizers, and then getting their meals for me to realize that we'd been completely forgotten. In an empty restaurant! After waiting 20-25 minutes I got up and notified someone of what happened, at which point they had to take our order again. What happened to the first order? I have no clue. The servers were apologetic at this point and the waitress made some excuse about being sleepy but really, there's no excuse for this, not when we're your only customers. I'll give it two stars instead of one just because the food that came to us eventually was great, but the drive from Coralville took less time than it took a server to get our order to the kitchen. In an empty restaurant. I don't necessarily think that this is the status quo for service here, but we won't be back.

I am a frequent flier at a local Japanese restaurant, and saw this restaurant while going up to Cedar Rapids for some errands and thought to try the food. The food was good, I had Bong Bun Nung (Sorry for everyone who I just offended by trying to spell phonetically Beef and delicious noodles) It may have been number 48? The crab rangoon was good, the mango bubble tea was awesome, and the #48 was as good as anywhere I have had that dish. Two of us ate for $24 and did not leave hungry. I would go back and eat here again if I am in the neighborhood. The worst part of the meal was the server who was overbearing. He was not actually our server, but kept stopping by and asking us (as well as others) awkward questions. Like how do you feel about the price, do you think you would return, are you 100% satisfied with your food? I started to wonder if he was doing market research and filling out a questioner as he was asking people these questions. Our server was fine...

Well, service was non-existent. I ordered 3 things all 3 times they came back 10 minutes later to tell me they were out of it... The only reason they get 2 stars is for opening something that's not your typical American Chinese food ready in 5-10 minutes place. Other than that pretty un impressive

There's plenty to love about Mai Pho: the first/only place in CR to offer bubble tea, it's clean, decent service and great recipes. We started out with the spring roll ($2.99) which was fresh and delish. We loved the peanut sauce for dipping. The mango bubble tea was flavorful and refreshing, something unique for CR at least for now. We ordered entrees from the stir fry menu (not Vietnamese) and opted for the fried rice. The Hunan beef was made with fresh veggies including broccoli, celery, onion, water chestnut, mushroom and carrot. This is a spicy dish and had plenty of heat via the dried pepper flakes. We also ordered the Mongolian chicken which had a great flavor in the sauce. The entrees were just $7.50. We'll be back to try the Pho. You can get the small bowl for lunch on Tuesday's for just $4.99.

This appears to be the most 1 and 5 star rated restaurant in CR. The reviewer who saw hair in food has me concerned, and I looked up the health inspection report at dia.iowa.gov/food/contro… . They reported some scary sounding items during an inspection in October 2013, which appeared to be resolved in a follow up inspection. I'm going to keep eating here. The tables and lighting fixtures are similar to an upscale restaurant, but the silverware comes in loosely wrapped paper napkins. I like the casual feel. The food is great and flavorful. There are six entree categories: Pho soup, Yellow Egg soup, Rice dishes, Stir-Fry, Vermicelli Noodles, and Vegetarian. I've tried something from each of the categories and The Pho soup is my favorite- the broth is delicious and as you eat, the jalapenos become increasingly concentrated & spicy in the remaining broth. I only made the mistake of adding hot sauce once... the final bites had me sweating! The vermicelli noodle dishes are second best. If you are at Pho Mai with coworkers or to meet your girlfriends parents, get the vermicelli noodles instead of the soup. The soup can bit a bit challenging to scoop & slurp. The vegetarian menu descriptions are all a little vague, and the one I tried was stir fried veggies and tofu on top of a salad of dry noodles. If I was a Cedar Rapids vegetarian I'd definitely try eating here for variety from the salads and fried cheese products at other CR restaurants. I don't know how to reconcile the reviewers giving this place 1 star because of the taste of the food. My guesses are: 1. This place was terrible for a couple months that I didn't eat here in the summer/Fall of 2013. 2. I've avoided the right dishes, although I've had at least 1 dish from each of the categories. 3. The 1-star reviewers are meat & potato types. If your idea of a great meal is a hamburger with only ketchup from Applebee's, you may not like Pho Mai. I'd encourage anyone who dislikes this place to try a #15 soup on a cold day and update your review. Speaking of cold day, don't sit near the front of the restaurant during winter. Every time the door opens a vacuum sucked blast of freezing air will hit your spine at 30mph! A stream of people were asking to be relocated this afternoon.
